ULI floats moving Tennessee Smokies to Fort Sanders

The Urban Land Institute has issued a final report in connection with its visit to Knoxville last October, and it includes an interesting idea.

The report cites the new soccer complex built near the intersection of Dale Avenue and 17th Street, and said there is an opportunity for a “consolidated sports hub” in the area, possibly including a new home for the Tennessee Smokies.

“Knoxville’s connection with baseball dates to 1897, and the lease on the Smokies’ facility on I-40 is up for renegotiation in seven years,” the report said. “The potential also exists to create a future new home for the Knoxville Ice Bears, since their current facility does not meet regulations and the future of the existing Civic Auditorium and Coliseum is under consideration.”
